THE “LACK OF PHILOSOPHICAL UNDERSTANDING”, OR THE RUSSIAN CRITICISM OF WESTERN RATIONALISM
Abstract
Th e attitude of Russian thinkers to Western philosophy has always been characterized as a certain criticism caused fi rst of all by the rejection of one-sided rationalism predominant in the West. It is the rationalism that has been treated as the main reason for all those “mistakes” and “thoughtlessnesses” which the doctrines of European philosophical authorities abounded with. In this context the works of Ivan Kireevsky, Karpov, Chaadaev, Soloviev, Nesmelov, and Shpet are considered. It is proved that Russian philosophers while working out their own methods of philosophical thinking aimed to discover the “shortcomings of philosophical understanding” and at the same time to make clear the general tasks and purposes of the development of the world philosophical thought.
