THEOLOGY OF RELIGIONS: MAPPING THE TERRITORY
Abstract
Th e article observes theology of religions as a specifi c branch of theology, its background as well as development of its basic positions: exclusivism, inclusivism, pluralism. Besides, it pays specifi c attention to the alternative ways of classifi cation and correlation between theology of religions and interreligious dialogue. Due to institutionalization of the theology of religions in XX century, the author proposes to take a look at the concept of proto-theology of religions, where diff erent types of attitude toward people of the “Other” faith were putted into threefold model. Also, he proposes to illustrate diff erent types of attitude toward non-Christian religions at the time of early Christianity, using examples of Augustine of Hippo and Justin, the Martyr. Moreover, the author tries to review the theology of religions in the context of its possible interchangeability with confessional study of religions and possibility of incorporation of the theology of religions into Eastern Orthodox Church’s theology.
