The article analyzes the process of formation of the national history of philosophical thought. The first part of the article examines the European history of the formation of the history of philosophy and proves that professionalization of philosophy became a catalyst for discussions about the nature of the history of philosophy. The article shows the connection between the institutionalization processes of philosophy in Russia and publishing the first works on the history of philosophy in the Russian language. For their qualitative assessment, it is proposed to consider the philosophy of Socrates. The ways of philosophical self-reflection are presented in describing the Socrates views. It highlights the secondary compilation nature of the first Russian histories of philosophy. The second part of the article is devoted to the study of the history of ancient philosophy in Russia. The development of ancient philosophy contributes to the expansion of the tools of the history of philosophy and to overcome its superficial, simplified presentation. The controversy about the tasks of the history of philosophy that unfolded in the 1890s between two thinkers, N. N. Strakhov Sr (1828–1896) and N. N. Strakhov Jr (1852–1928) testifies the new quality of the history of philosophy as an independent science and academic discipline. Its analysis in the final part of the article allows asserting that by the end of the 19th century, the history of philosophy has been formed in Russia as an independent specialized field of philosophical knowledge.
