RUSSIAN ORTHODOX MISSION IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY: POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS
Abstract
During a long time from 1713 to 1864 Russian Orthodox mission combined the missionary, educational, diplomatic functions, conducted research and studied the political and economic environment in China. Th ese actions were implemented as the members of the mission, including doctors and students which were assigned to the mission and albazins — the descendants of Cossacks from the captured in 1685 fortress of Albazin. Russian Orthodox mission until 1864, despite its belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church, was under the control of the Asian Department of the Ministry of foreign Aff airs. Based on the analysis of numerous archival materials, the author shows that the investigation by the Russian Orthodox mission about the political and economic activities in China helped the Russian government to correct its actions towards China, and contributed to the normalization of cross-cultural relations.
