FORM AND FUNCTION IN 20-CENTURY MUSEUM ARCHITECTURE
Abstract
Th e article deals with the transformation that occurred in the 20th century, of museum building as a type of public building, when a single type of museum disappears, but instead of it there appears an endless series of heterogeneous buildings, at fi rst glance not united by a common idea. Author, taking domestic and foreign museum buildings as an example, attempts to trace the logic of museum architecture in this period, through the relationship between the function performed by the museum and its spatial structure. To this end we must distinguish between fi ve functions: informative, aesthetic, cultural, educational, ideological, functions of integration and demonstration, and the particular architectural exposition and techniques that allow for the best way to implement these functions. Also the article draws parallels between historical consciousness and the image of the museum building.
