PERSONNEL POLICY OF THE IMPERIAL ORTHODOX PALESTINE SOCIETY IN THE MIDDLE EAST (1882–1914): RUSSIAN EDUCATIONAL STAFF
Abstract
Th e paper highlights the important aspect of activities of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (IOPS), the largest Russian charitable organization abroad: personnel policy for the Russian educational staff in the Middle East. Many documents of Nikolai Anichkov, the curator of IOPS schools (letters, reports and diary) were examined. Th e history and development of the IOPS school network is shown in the work, the assessment of staff is given, diff erent types of schools (focused on secular and religious education) are compared. Th e author considers the eff orts made by IOPS in order to attract employees and to motivate them to work, describes the complexity of the work abroad and the problems of intercultural and inter-ethnic relations, and come to conclusions about the eff ectiveness of IOPS personnel policy.
