Paideia during a post-education epoch
Abstract
The article analyzes the transformation of the sense of paideia from its classical (ancient Greek) understanding to its interpretation in the modern philosophy of integral education that is reflected in the manifesto “The paideia proposal”. The author considers a number of the key reports made on the World philosophical congress (1998), passing under the motto “Philosophy as the teacher of mankind”. The idea of “integral” philosophy of education combines topical issues of tolerance, multiculturalism and globalism with the traditional approaches of the twentieth century — personalism, pragmatism and existentialism. The positions of researchers like M. Kato, P. Hogan, K. Biller, P. D. Grosch, S. L. Sheppard, T. O. Buford and others demonstrate consensus on the prospects for development of paideia. It must become a cultural environment that forms the man of the future.
