Abstract
Th e article traces the evolution of the concept of identity in the humanities and clarifi es its philosophical meaning, analyses the problem of sustainability and integrity of identity in a multiplicity of identities. Temporality is regarded as characteristic of the identity marking other identities in the context of increasing complexity and acceleration of the identifi cation processes. From the perspective of «hermeneutics of oneself» the article emphasizes the narrative aspect of identity, because life attains unity and can be told only in the form of a narrative. Th e article examines the interaction of historical memory and forgetting, which are the mechanisms of formation of the historical identity, and of constructing the individual route in the territory, which has the interpretative capability.
