DIALECTICS OF DEATH AND IMMORTALITY IN EXHIBITION PROJECTS OF JOSEPH BEUYS
Abstract
Th e article examines the concepts of death and immortality in the art and exhibition practice of the German artist of the second half of the 20th century Joseph Beuys. Dialectics of death and immortality in the art of the well-known conceptual artist is revealed in the context of three main prerequisites: his interest in anthroposophy of Rudolf Steiner, the substantial for the 20th century culture theme of “death of art” and mythical fi gure of the “death of the author”, symbolic for the period of postmodernism. For understanding the mechanism of metamorphosis, leading from “death” to “immortality” in the art of Beuys, his large-scale exhibitions in the largest museums are essential. In the context of these issues Joseph Beuys as a theorist and practitioner of contemporary art reveals the contradiction between the symbolic value of contemporary art and its perception and interpretation.
