Abstract
Th e article deals with the conception of genius in the philosophy of Nietzsche and its infl uence on the poetic work of Th . Mann. In the books Die Geburt der Tragedie aus dem Geiste der Musik, Menschliches, Allzumenschliches, Morgenröte, Fröhliche Wissenschaft the semantic transformation of the «genius» in the philosophical work of Fr. Nietzsche is shown. In the book Die Geburt der Trage die aus dem Geiste der Musik the Dionysian conception of the genius is connected with idea of the arts, accompanied by the criticism of rationalism. Developing the term of «der Freigeist» («the free spirit») in his book Menschliches, Allzumenschliches, Nietzsche connects «the Dionysian» not with arts but with the free cognition of the scientist. Th e idea of emotional and intellectual Dionysian infl uenced the conception of arts in such works by Th omas Mann as the novel Doktor Faustus and the short story Tonio Kröger.
