MORALITY AS KNOWLEDGE IN ETHICAL TEACHING OF THOMAS AQUINAS
Abstract
Th e article discusses the innovative spirit of XIII century, associated with the spread of Latin translations of Aristotle’s philosophical treatises and discussions around adequate understanding of his heritage. Th e group of teachers of philosophy of Paris University, led by Siger of Brabant and Boethius the Dacian insisted on non-social position of the philosopher. T. Aquinas develops a moral doctrine connected with the regulation of the daily lives of ordinary believers. Considering the ethical teaching of Th omas Aquinas the author stresses that logic and discursive reasoning were crucial for the medieval thinker when making moral decisions. In this sense, Aquinas has inherited and developed the theoretical principles of Aristotelian doctrine and besides the formation of medieval urban traditions was refl ected in his ethics. Refs 15.
