Suit as a sign and concept of identity
Abstract
The article considers semiotics of a dress which is regarded as a sign in the culture as a system. Any sign is characterized by dualistic nature, i.e. it consists of signifi ed and signifi cant. This dualism is also revealed in dual function of the dress: it has both its purpose and meaning. Therefore theoretical researches, which focus on such cultural phenomenon as a style, should consider a dress as a unity of these two components. A dress as a sign “attached” to a person provides him/her with contextual importance, makes him/her be unique, thus place him/her into existence. Since sign is a cultural phenomenon which codifies socially significant information, a dress influences its “owner”, promoting self-identification and socialization of a person.
