Abstract

Th e paper analyzes the process of refl ection of anticlericalism in English caricature in the period of «golden age» of her development. Using “Сatalogue of Political and Personal Satires Preserved in the British Museum”, the author comes to the conclusion that anticlerical prints were widespread, especially in the periods of struggle for parliamentary reform in the end of 1810 and the beginning of 1830s. Th e Church of England was one of the main pillars of the ancien regime. So, in the process of its decline and crisis the Church of England became the object of rising criticism in caricature. If at the turn of the centuries caricaturists mocked the unworthy behaviour of particular parsons, in the 1810–1830s they already criticized the Church of England as an institution. Prints were one of the ways of representation of anticlerical frame of mind and may be considered a historical source.
