Abstract

The paper discuses the infl uence of Robert Southey (English romantic poet, religious and social thinker) on the development of the Oxford movement. The paper compares main political, social and religious tracts by Southey and the texts of the Oxford movement. The author comes to a conclusion that it is impossible to see Southey as a theological predecessor of the Tractarians. For him the Church of England was a useful institute, but the participants of the Oxford movement treated it as a sacral institute. But it is possible to regard Southey as a cultural predecessor of the Tractarians due to his interest in Roman Catholic cult, saints, and critical attitude to the Reformation.
