Mass culture, game and new religiousness
Abstract
When analyzing new forms of religiousness based on “mass culture myths” and exploring the reasons of their origin it appears to be quite effi cient to use some concepts developed in the frame of game theory of culture. The roots of new religiousness are hidden not only in the process of secularization and in search for new religious forms, but in the very nature of a man as homo ludens. Game has important social and psychological functions, sometimes close to religious ones, thus many new religious phenomena can be explained by game specifics. Modern man living in the secularized world does not invent new myths but seeks for virtual reality, which promotes self-formation and broadens the personality limits.
