PLAN OF A. S. LAPPO-DANILEVSKY’S SOCIAL SCIENCE THEORY (an essay in reconstruction)
Abstract
Th e article is based on archival materials deposited in the fund of academician Alexander Lappo-Danilevsky (1863–1919) at the St.Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In particular, the article attempts to reconstruct the “Plan of theory of social science,” which Lappo- Danilevsky worked on during the last years of his life, but has not published papers on this subject. Archival materials enable us to reconstruct the structure of the theory of social science, and in part the content. Lessons of methodology of history and sociology formed the basis for the formulation of Lappo- Danilevsky theory of social science. Th e main ideas of Lappo-Danilevsky philosophical teachings correspond to positivism and neo-Kantianism. According to his approach, the theory of social science on the one hand should have proven the status of history as a science, on the other hand, should have demonstrated the unity of social knowledge, shown the general theoretical and philosophical foundations of social sciences and humanities, in order to show the unity of the historical epistemology and social cognition.
