THE JUDAIZERS: CONCERNING THE DEFINITION OF THE TERM
Abstract
Th e article deals with the problem of the semantic content of the term ‘Judaizers’. Th e author fi nds the theory of the Hungarian researcher R. Dan, who attempted to clarify the meaning content of the uncertain and undefi ned Latin verb ‘judaizare’, not to be suffi ciently relevant. Th e origin of the concept ‘Judaizers’ and its further evolution in the Christian tradition are examined in the article. Th e brief description of the diverse historical versions of Judaizing — from quasi-proselytes of antiquity to the modern religious movements — is covered here. Various interpretations of the term ‘Judaizers’, refl ected in the popular encyclopedias, are analyzed as well. Th e author diff erentiates ‘Judaizers’, ‘Judeo- Christians’, ‘proselytes’, proposes her own defi nition of the term and tries to reveal the relevant features of the phenomenon of the Judaizers.
