On the origin of comparative religious studies in Russia
Abstract
In Russia the beginning of a “science of religion” as a self-discipline should be attributed to the last third of the 19th — beginning of 20th century, when the comparative method in linguistics led to an interest in comparative and historical study of cultures and religions of diff erent peoples, including the people of the Russian Empire. Prominent role in the development of domestic science of religion was played by L. Ya. Shternberg (1861–1927), regarded in the article not only as an anthropologist, but as a theorist and methodologist of holistic study of religion as a cultural and historical phenomenon. Some pages of the article are devoted to the first stages of implementation of comparative religion in the University’s curriculum.
